Peppa Pig Introduces Same-Sex Couple!

As a proudly inclusive community, we're thrilled to see the new same-sex parents on kid's TV show, Peppa Pig!

In episode 41 of season seven, titled Families (this first aired on Channel 5 on Tuesday the 6th of September), Penny the polar bear introduced her two mummies in a scene where Peppa Pig and her school friends are asked to paint pictures representing their families to display on the classroom wall.

Each pupil is then given the chance to introduce their family members painted on their work, with Penny telling her classmates; "I’m Penny Polar Bear. I live with my mummy and my other mummy. One mummy is a doctor and one mummy cooks spaghetti. I love spaghetti." We then meet Penny's mothers at school pick up time.

What has the response to the new characters been like?

The overall response online has been incredibly positive, with thousands social media users abuzz at the decision to show an LGBTQ+ couple for the first time ever in the history of Peppa Pig. It goes without saying that there has also been a backlash against this decision by some parents, with Good Morning Britain slammed for their 'awkward' segment covering the show.

Our verdict...

We have a number of LGBTQ+ members in our online parenting community, all of whom are raising happy, loved and thriving families. It's really pleasing to see diverse families being represented in the mainstream media - because how much more mainstream could a show as popular as Peppa Pig be - and we certainly hope to see more of Penny Polar Bear's two mummies.
