Regarding the episode of Coronation Street on 09/05/2018
Tonight’s agonisingly emotional episode of Coronation Street has touched so many people due to the distressing nature of the topic – suicide – that was featured, and lots of mummies have reached out to share their stories to raise awareness of the implications of mental health problems, and to share support to those out there who are struggling in silence.
The more we speak out, the closer we get to removing the awful stigma that is still, despairingly, preventing people in need of support from seeking help that could save them.
I’ve just finished watching the episode, and it has compelled me to write this short but sweet blog to , to everyone who is struggling with mental health problems, that you really do not have to suffer in silence like the character Aidan.
As a company whose work revolves around parents & babies, we are huge advocates for parental mental health in particular. I myself suffered with Post Natal Depression, and I know all too well the feelings, the fear, the self-loathing, the pain, fury, humiliation… and the knock-on effect on loved ones. Down the line and with heaps of support, I am much happier, my PND feels like it was just a bad dream apart from the odd bad day. It gets better, without meaning to sound clichéd, but it didn’t feel that way sometimes.
Just remember this…
You are loved. You are needed. You WOULD be missed dreadfully if you weren’t around any more. The sun will shine again.
If you are struggling, please speak out and seek help.
The NHS has a list of amazing hotlines, websites and support resources here.
Book an urgent GP appointment and be completely honest to them as they can refer you, recommend support networks, and offer treatment options.
Speak to your loved ones, don’t be afraid to explain that you need their support.
Stay safe, and know that support is out there for you.
Lots of love from Team BBY. Xx
