Current List of Schools Affected By Concrete Closures

Is your child's school one those affected by the recent concrete quality scares?

Some schools across Britain are having to delay opening for the new school year after fears were raised over a type of concrete used in their construction - the Department for Education has now identified all affected schools and released a list.

A full list has been released once all parents are told and 'mitigations' such as closing certain classrooms, buildings or the entire site, are put in place.

Why is the concrete a safety concern & why do some schools need to stay closed?

The issue lies behind the fact that reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) was used during the construction of many schools. It has recently been discovered that RAAC is not as strong or reliable as we once thought, posing a safety issue. The UK government states on their RAAC guidance:

"RAAC is a lightweight form of concrete. The Standing Committee on Structural Safety (SCOSS) has noted that: "Although called “concrete”, (RAAC) is very different from traditional concrete and, because of the way in which it was made, much weaker.

RAAC was used in schools, colleges and other building construction from the 1950s until the mid-1990s. It may therefore be found in any school and college building (educational and ancillary) that was either built or modified in this time period."
