Wondering when your little angel will take their first teetering steps?
You’re not alone – most parents find themselves early anticipating these exciting milestones, and worrying that their child hasn’t met them – we’re here to reassure you and look into how much the timeframe of first steps varies between babies. I often found myself obsessing over milestones until I was shown just how different babies can be!
The official guidelines state that babies should find their way to walking between the ages of 9 – 12 months. Of course, this will vary between babies and whilst some may be early walkers, others may be later, and it’s natural for parents to be concerned. Remember that there are SO many factors responsible for physical development!
If you have any worries, speak to your GP or Health Visitor especially if there is any family history of;
- Joint Hypermobility or associated conditions such as Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (hello to any fellow zebra parents reading this!)
- Hip Dysplasia
- History of ear infections
- Other symptoms worrying you
We asked the mummies in our community when THEIR babies first walked…
The results were pretty much as expected. Many fell within the average 9-12 month mark, whilst others were early, and others ‘late’ walkers. How many babies walked at 6 months? We did have 6 who walked before 9 months, but only one who walked at 7 months. Here’s the stats at the time of writing;
The amount of variation between our mummy respondents is great, and really highlights the repetitive but true adage that every child really is different. Please don’t worry, and enjoy watching your wee one learning and growing. It’s such a magical time!
Think your baby was an early walker? Well, check this out for EARLY…
Picture this; you’re a first time mum, going with the flow with your adorable 6 month old and BOOM – she starts walking! Little Freya Minter shocked her parents by toddling when she barely looks old enough to crawl – amazing, and definitely a rarity.
