International Day of the Midwife

Today is International Day of the Midwife!

What a perfect opportunity to thank our midwives and share our stories to celebrate these heroines (and heroes) whose vocation & calling is to bring our precious babies into the world safely.

Why was International Day of the Midwife established?

‘On May 5 each year we ask the world to focus on the role of midwives and midwifery. Each year ICM comes up with a campaign theme to provide motivating call to action for all of us to get involved and champion our work. The International Day of the Midwife is an occasion for every individual midwife to think about the many others in the profession, to make new contacts within and outside midwifery, and to widen the knowledge of what midwives do for the world.’ (ICM)

How can I get involved?

  • Hold an event to fundraise for your local midwifery unit – ask them if there is a cause that needs extra money, or even just for a treat for them as a thank you. You could do a bake sale, BBQ, car boot, or a sponsored event.
  • Share your birth stories where your midwife has really stood out as a star, and use the hashtag #internationaldayofthemidwife – you can do this on any social media platform that supports the hashtag feature.
  • Midwives are encouraged to hold workshops and conferences to help widen the knowledge of the role of midwives.

My midwife…

I know it sounds awful but I can’t remember her name, I was so out of it! I remember her blue hair, so if you were a midwife (with blue hair) at Burton Queens Hospital on August the 23rd 2016, please drop me a comment to say hi! She was super reassuring, especially when I was told I needed an emergency caesarean after 14 hours of labour. I was distraught, I’ve honestly never been so upset in my life to date, but my midwife was really supportive of me and my partner, and she took our first family photo! Thank you, if you’re reading this. You were great!

Midwifery is a very complex and important role, and something that not many people could endure. I have nothing but the utmost admiration for you all!

Tell us your midwife stories in the comments!
