Afternoon Mummies and Daddies
As many of us know, Charlie Gard has been in hospital fighting with his parents to get legal consent to take him for treatment in the US.
But today we have had the very sad news that Charlie Gard has lost his battle with Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Doctors have won the case against the Gard family and they are now able to withdraw life support. His rare condition called Mitochondrial Depletion Syndrome. He is the 16th reported case with this type of disease and is currently no cure under the NHS.
Specialists from the Great Ormond Street Hospital have said that eight-month-old Charlie Gard has irreversible brain damage which has apparently left him deaf, blind and the disease causes progressive muscle weakness.
His parents, Connie Yates and Chris Gard had wanted to take their son to the US for a treatment trial. Raising over 1.2m in donations and fundraising for their little fighter.
But unfortunately the judge has said it was in Charlie’s best interest to turn off his life support. The judge, Mr Justice Francis, said that he made the decision with the ‘heaviest of hearts’ but with ‘complete conviction’ that it is the best thing to do.
Here at Bump, Baby and You, we just wanted Connie and Chris to know that we are so sorry. We wish you the very best!
Please take a minute for him, send them a prayer and at 7pm we will be holding a Candle Lighting in our group.
