Baby, Toddler and Kids World Book Day Costumes 2019

If you’re little one is now in nursery you may be preparing for your first ever World Book Day and perhaps be wondering what kind of costume they should wear. Or maybe you’ve got some school-aged children and thanks to all their extra-curricular activities, their lost PE kit and the reminder for the dog’s booster injections, World Book Day slipped off your radar? Don’t worry! While it’s nice to get creative and make costumes together – there’s not always time.

We’ve rounded up some of the best World Book Day options for all ages. From costumes for babies and toddlers through to five-year-olds and ten-year-olds, our World Book Day outfit roundup has got you covered!

When is World Book Day and what is it all about?

World Book Day started in 1995, which makes this year the 22nd World Book Day. This means the day is new to lots of mums and dads as it wasn’t around when they were at school. The idea is to celebrate all the authors, books and characters we love and hopefully introduce each other to new favourites as a result.

World Book Day is also a registered charity and every year the organisation distributes book tokens out to children and young people, so they can pick out a book of their own at a participating bookshop.

Many nurseries and schools encourage kids to dress up for the day or to do take part in literary arts and crafts. You may also find some special story time readings or events on offer at your local library too.

Cute World Book Day Costumers for Babies and Toddlers

Oh-Elmer-G! How cute is this colourful Elmer costume? It’s from George at Asda and is the perfect outfit for toddlers who love the patchwork elephant. It’s one of my little girl’s favourite stories right now so I think this is what she’ll be wearing on World Book day (and probably for trips to the supermarket too).

You can find it here*.

Or how about your very own cute and cuddly Pooh-Bear? This outfit is sweet as honey!

We found it here*.

Maybe a Tigger outfit is more appropriate for your energetic bouncing toddler?

And for babies newborn up, this little Piglet outfit from Sainsbury’s Tu is adorable (and they’ve got a Pooh version too!)

Younger School Kids World Book Day Ideas

By school age kids have very distinct ideas about which books and characters they like. Luckily, there are some fantastic outfits covering all bases from contemporary classics such as the funny books of David Walliams through to old-school favourites like Beatrix Potter. Here are our picks for ages three and above.

Another winner from Sainsburys is this grrrr-eat Gruffalo costume, which is available for little ones aged 1 years up to 7-8 (though largest size is currently out of stock).

You Can buy your own here*.

Or how about this beautiful Beatrix Potter Rabbit costume? It could prove a wise buy with Easter just around the corner – two occasions covered off all in one costume!

If you love reading David Walliams’ books together or watching the adaptations on TV maybe they would get a giggle from dressing as Gangsta Granny?

World Book Day Costumes for Bigger Kids

Need a slightly larger costume for older siblings?

This Where’s Wally kit is a really versatile option and is available in sizes up to teen.

You can find it here*.

Of course, you cant get much bigger than the BFG! This costume is available in up to age 10-12 and comes with the horn too, which we haven’t seen elsewhere.

You can pick it up here*.

The funny rhyming prose of Dr Seuss has helped his books hold appeal across generations. This officially licensed Dr Seuss Thing 1 0r 2 costume comes in sizes small (age 4-6) and medium (age 7-9), and we also spotted an adult version too – just in case you need to dress up for work on World Book Day!

You can find the kid’s version here* and the adult costume here*.

We always love seeing homemade costumes from World Book Day on our feed along with shop bought outfits. If you’ve got a few World Book Day’s behind you and a couple of costumes in the wardrobe, you could consider swapping with other Mums and Dads in future years to help keep costs down. Will your kids be dressing up for World Book Day?
