Baby, It's Cold Outside: Top Tips For Snow Day Safety!

While it can be an inconvenience to everyone trying to go about their daily business, snow can also be a lot of fun!

You could stay indoors and enjoy the views… but that snowman isn’t going to build itself! If you want your little one to enjoy the snow safely, here are our top tips!

1. Layer Up!
This can be a tricky one – too few layers and they’ll get cold, and too many layers and they’ll overheat… the key is to conserve heat while still allowing steam to escape.  So keep it loose, lightweight and water repellent – and add one more layer on a child than an adult would wear in the same conditions.

For tiny ones, you’ll find some fab snowsuits here*, for toddlers and older kids, there’s a HUGE selection of coats and jackets here*.

2. Protect Those Heads, Hands & Feet!
In cold temperatures, our bodies instinctively focus their efforts on protecting our cores…. meaning our extremities such as hands and feet get the cold shoulder! Choose some good quality mitts that have an insulating layer as well as a waterproof outer layer.

To protect those tiny toes, a thick pair of socks and good, sturdy, waterproof boots or wellies.

And don’t forget that a lot of body heat is lost through the head – so a good hat is a MUST! Check these beauties out!*

3. Dress Them To Be Seen!
You want to be able to see your kids easily, so dressing them in white when they’re playing in white snow just won’t work. Also, if there are any roads to cross, you want drivers to be able to spot them. Choose bright colours for the outer layers – preferably with reflective graphics so that they can be seen in all weather conditions.

4. Dashing Through The Snow!
When I was little, I used to hurtle down huge hills on an old gas board… do I let my kids do that? No way!

Pick your sledding spot carefully – make sure the area is open and free of cars, trees, posts, and rocks. Make sure your sledge is undamaged and suitable for the age of your child…. these ones have been specially designed for babies!*

5. Stay Hydrated & Take Lots of Breaks!
It’s always important to stay hydrated, but in colder weather it’s harder to tell if you’re thirsty. Take regular breaks – and remember… hot chocolate has water in it too   obviously only for those old enough!

Happy (safe) snow day everyone!
